AT WELSH POSTAL HISTORY MEETINGS

This map shows the area of Flintshire immediately north of the Denbighshire border to the north of Wrexham

`The village of Cefn-y-Bedd (the ridge by the tomb0 had a straight line mark for which a correctly spelt example was identified by Broomfield - does any member have such an item? Most examples show a misspelling Cefu y Bedd, as shown on the le3ft.

Caergwrle Castle was the last to be built (1278-1282) by a native Welsh prince: Dafydd ap Gruffudd. It provided a base for him to attack the English garrison at Hawarden in 1282.

This was the eveny that stimulated Edward I to set up his second campaign against the Welsh.

Hope is another village in the Alyn valley - the name derives from the Welsh Yr Hôb - the name of a ‘Hundred’ (Cantref) identified in image 4 above. The undated circle mark is rare.

Just to the south of Mold, on either side of the village of Leeswood, lie Pontybodkin and Pontblythen.

This image is the front of an enire sent from Edward Brereton MP in London to Richard Mostyn at Penbedw near Mould (sic) in Flintshire, by the Northop Bag. It is marked as a ‘Frank’ - a free facility available to Members of Parliament. The letter is clearly date 1691 internally.

Above is a part of the lineage of the Mostyn family of Penbedw (as distinct from the Mostyn family of Talacre).

The rest of the display ( 76 frames ) will be presented on this site at a further date. This is the first attempt to use this display format on this website. I would welcome as much feedback as possible from those members of the Society who have acc3ess to the internet.
